Language and Localization Support

Brainfish provides flexible and powerful language support across the platform, help center websites, and AI — making it easier for teams to serve customers in their preferred language.

Types of localization

We currently offer three types:

  1. Real-time translation for AI answers — Brainfish agents support real-time translation in over 100 languages. Users can ask questions in their own language and receive answers in that same language.
  2. Region-specific content for help centers and agents — help center articles and agent responses can be tailored for specific regions and written in different languages. We support all countries and continents.
  3. Brainfish admin platform — the admin platform is available in 19 languages. By default, Brainfish detects the browser language of the user and displays the interface in that language. Admins can switch manually under Settings → Preferences → Language.

Choose your language from the Language dropdown

Localizing your agent for a global audience

This section explains how to internationalize an agent to support multiple languages. By translating your agent you offer more intuitive, accessible support to customers in their native language.

How it works

The agent's internationalization feature has two parts:

  1. Configuration — in the agent's settings, select a target language (locale) and provide translations for all user-facing text (titles, placeholder text, suggested questions).
  2. Automatic detection — on your live site or application, the agent automatically detects the end-user's preferred language from their browser settings. If you have translations for that language, the agent displays in the user's language; otherwise it falls back to the primary language (e.g., English).

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open agent settings. From the Distribution → Agents menu, select the agent you want to translate.
  2. Select the target language. At the top of the settings page, click the language dropdown (default: English (US)) and pick the language to add translations for (e.g., 繁體中文).
  3. Locate translatable fields. Open Agent Settings and Popup Settings. When a language other than the default is selected, every translatable field shows a locale code next to its label (e.g., Suggestions title (zh_TW)).
  4. Enter translated text. Type or paste translations into the input fields: Suggestions title, individual suggestions, widget title, and placeholder text.
  5. Preview. Use the Preview button or the live preview panel to confirm how translations render in the widget.
  6. Save. Click Save Changes to apply translations to the agent.

Accessing and configuring Knowledge Settings

Use these steps to control which knowledge sources an agent uses to answer questions:

  1. From Distribution → Agents, select the agent you want to configure.
  2. On the agent's settings page, scroll to the Knowledge Settings section and expand it.
  3. Restrict the agent to a particular region or language as needed.

Common questions

What happens if a user's browser language is one I haven't translated? The agent falls back to the primary language, typically English (en-US).

Does the language I select in the settings change the language for all users? No. The locale switcher in settings is only for editing translations. The language displayed to the end-user is determined by their own browser settings.

Why are the field labels showing a code like (zh_TW)? The locale code reminds you which language you're editing. It only appears when a language other than the default (English US) is selected.

If I switch back to English, will my translations be lost? No. Translations are saved per locale. You can switch between languages in settings without losing work.

Troubleshooting

  • Translations not appearing on your live site — confirm the end-user has the correct language set as their preferred browser language, and that you've saved translations for that specific language in the agent's settings.
  • Translated text not appearing in preview — ensure you've clicked out of the text field. Some updates render only after the field loses focus. A page refresh may be necessary.
  • Can't find a field to translate — some text in the agent isn't customizable. If no field exists for a specific string, it's part of the core non-editable interface.

Language support in practice

  • AI answers — when a user asks a question in their language, Brainfish automatically interprets it and responds in that same language.
  • Articles — Brainfish does not auto-translate your articles. Articles are considered a source of truth, and machine translation can misinterpret unique phrases or terms. Create articles natively in the languages you want to support; you can use the Brainfish Article Copilot to help translate content.
  • Help center and agents — filter region-specific content for your audience when configuring agents and your Help Center. To filter languages for agents, go to Distribution → Agents → Knowledge Settings → restrict the agent to a region or language.
